Introduction to the Bayan – The Button Accordion by the accordionist Nikos Pantehis

The Bayan, the Russian button accordion (C-system), is one of the most advanced and expressive instruments in the accordion family. This seminar aims to give participants—especially accordion players who use the piano accordion—the opportunity to become familiar with the philosophy, technical capabilities, and repertoire of the Bayan, as well as to experience it hands-on through interactive exercises.

o Differences from the classical piano accordion
o The logic of the button system (C-system) - Capabilities & Characteristics:
o Tonal and atonal polyphony
o Dynamic range and expressive techniques
o Common uses in contemporary and classical music - Live Demonstration:
o Performance of repertoire excerpts highlighting the Bayan’s capabilities - Audience Interaction:
o Short practical trials for piano accordion players
o Familiarization with button layout and ergonomics
o Basic exercises for first contact with the instrument
The seminar is addressed to musicians of all levels and aims not only to inform but mainly to provide a hands-on experience, allowing participants to gain a real understanding of what it means to play the Bayan.
